About Isle & Island

Briefly
Isle & Islandfollows the misadventures of some 16th century European colonists who have lost their way while sailing to the New World, and were instead shipwrecked on a small Pacific island. If you think that sounds a bit boring, you probably don't know anything about 16th century stereotypes. Here is a world full of pirates, huge naval battles, oppressed natives who avenge the European invaders, pirates, lost treasure, lost empires, pirates, sea monsters, and pirates. Ok, so not all of these things have yet been mentioned in the comic, but it gives you an idea of why I picked the setting. I'm not likely to run out of good material anytime soon.

The Characters
The world of Isle & Island is populated by a hilarious... err... well, somewhat humorous bunch of characters. And here they are:

Isle
Isle is the comic's main character, and his name was suggested by one David Vance, an acquaintance of mine, in order to create a nice alliteration effect in the title. Isle is a rather optimistic, good-natured sort of fellow who wears a triangular hat. He is quite intelligent, but, like most characters in the comic, often makes mistakes, mostly due to his good-natured optimism, and only rarely due to the triangular hat.

Sullivan
Sullivan embodies the superstitious beliefs that were so common in the 16th century, and are probably more common today. Nonetheless, he is by no means a fool, which makes arguing with him particularly annoying. No-one bothers to do so, anyway.

Iri
Iri is the latest addition to the cast of characters, so recent, in fact, that she won't appear in any comics for a little while (the storyline where we first meet her has already been drawn, but will not be published for a few weeks). She has the job of being the unemotional, always serious character - sort of like Mr. Spock in personality, but without the funny ears.

Nérdé the Scholar
Nérdé provides strange invention relief whenever I am stuck with a storyline. A few centuries ahead of his time, he is your stereotypical, skeptical, glasses-laden, very-likely-to-accidentally-blow-something-up-
and-then-be-burned-at-the-stake-for-it kind of scientist. Except that he's dressed as a monk. Oh well.

A Dolphin
My theory is that people hate dolphins. Otherwise, dolphinariums (marine parks) would not be so popular. In any case, I decided that the resident pessimist will be a talking dolphin. You can't pronounce his name without severely injuring your upper palate, so I don't mention it in the comic. This creature is my favorite character, so I will try to work him into as many storylines as I can, although he is more of a recurring character right now.

Bob
Bob is dull, and is rarely interested in much of anything. He is also a habitual thief, and a lousy conversationalist. In short, I evoke him when I have to approximate the average colonist.

The Island Natives
The natives of Island were never particularly violent, and never had any intention of becoming so. However, once the Europeans arrived, they immediately received the label of Bloodthirsty Cannibals, and were (albeit, unintentionally) forced to the other half of the island by the colonists. They're actually pacifist and vegetarian, but they feel that on some occasions, it is necessary to take up arms, with the usual unrealistic and even humorous comic strip results.

The Pirates
And of course, what would any comic strip about the 16th century be without pirates. Recently, the pirates have switched from raiding Spanish galleons to offering a first-class ocean cruise service, but that only makes them more dangerous.

Phew. So there.
Ok, so there is plenty of legal stuff that printing this disclaimer will not protect me from, but at least it was fun to write.
